The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
