US Attack on Venezuela Stokes Concerns of Future Greenland Takeover.

The recent American strike in the South American nation and the detention of its president have renewed apprehension regarding Washington's ambitions on Greenland. Members of the ex-president's political movement have reportedly set their sights on the resource-rich landmass following the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Only hours following the commencement of the Caracas campaign, a prominent right-wing podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential aide, shared a suggestive image. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the American flag, with the cryptic message: "SOON."

This overt suggestion to claim the resource-abundant region, which is a part of the NATO alliance, triggered immediate and firm condemnation from Danish representatives.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. US security is also the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States collaborate to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The ambassador further pointed out that Denmark had significantly increased its defence spending this year, earmarking a large amount expressly for Northern and regional defence. "And yes, we demand complete recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he emphasized.

Administrative Appointments and Strategic Goals

The situation were further exacerbated by the recent naming of a US state governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "privilege" to work in a unpaid capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's actions, linking it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Since assuming office, the US president has repeatedly unnerved transatlantic allies with his stated desire in Greenland. The territory is viewed as vitally strategic for defence and potential resource extraction. It already hosts the northernmost US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a significant television interview, the leader declined to exclude the resorting to military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes during intensifying global rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Friction and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of threats, Denmark's intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland delivered a joint and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a complex picture. While a vast majority of the island's residents desire independence from Denmark, there is also scant appetite to become part of the United States. The territory has had the option to declare independence for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Some experts are now re-evaluating the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank director specializing in military analysis admitted she had previously discounted the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a couple hundred or a couple thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could do anything about it," she observed.
