Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
